PRACTICAL COMMON-SENSE ON LIVING WITH COPD
THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!!

To all who contributed to this fine book, my undying gratitude!

When first diagnosed with COPD, all I wanted to do was research, research, research! The more I read, the more frustrated I became - that is until I located Courage and Information. This book is so down-to-earth! And it is filled with prospectives of not only a physician (with no medical "jargon"), a psychiatrist (without all the normal "stuff") and...can you believe it?...A PATIENT. How unusual to find a book written, at least in part, from the patient's prospective. What a great idea! Like I said earlier, just good, practical, common-sense information.

Even my pulmonologist agrees that it is the best resource material he has seen! And as far as I'm concerned, that's the best recommendation of all!

It really WILL help me to live a better, more fulfilling life. It will help you too. But you've got to read it first. You'll be glad you did.

I KNOW I AM.

Helping You Find the Way
If you or someone you love has been given the diagnosis of COPD, you may be asking, What now? Is there anything that can be done? Is there hope? The answer is, Yes! Life can be good with COPD and this book is a most valuable resource for the COPD patient, caregiver, and health care professional.

As a respiratory therapist working in Pulmonary Rehab I see that patients who learn about their disease and how to cope with the changes it brings live healthier, happier lives. They know that education, exercise, and support as well as a positive attitude are so important.

Courage and Information for Life with COPD is not only your map to learning, among other things, about finding a great specialist, taking breathing medications, using supplemental oxygen if needed, and finding help and support in your community. It is the story of a lady who has experienced the devastation of the diagnosis and not only lives, but thrives with COPD! Jo-Von Tucker's search for knowledge has helped her to move from the role of patient / victim to that of person / survivor. You must know that you do not have to face COPD alone! When reading Courage and Information you will surely say, That's me. Jo-Von's been through some of the same things that I'm going through.

There are so many things you can do to help yourself. Changed as it may be, you can live a rich and full life, even with COPD. Courage and Information willl help you find the way.

Electronic Study Guide
Published in CD-ROM by McGraw-Hill Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages (31 July, 1998)
Author: Brooke Noel Moore
Average review score:

An excellent resource and text...
Moore and Bruder have, in my view, provided an excellent philosophical resource. The 3rd and 4th editions have proved invaluable in my work, both as a student and an instructor. I have no doubt that the 5th edition equals its predecessors and would readily adopt it as the required text in any Introductory Philosophy course.

the best of philosophy all in one book!
This book does an excellent job of explaining concepts and ideas of different philosophers throughout history. It is almost like Cliffs Notes for philosophy. I would recommend this book to anyone who is having trouble understanding the readings of Plato, Aristotle, Hegel, Hume, Spinoza, Kant, or any other great minds. This book is an excellent reference and is highly recommended.

Faith on the Edge: Daring to Follow Jesus
Published in Paperback by Intervarsity Press (December, 1999)
Authors: Paul Tokunaga, Kevin Blue, Amy Brooke, Robbie Castleman, Bobby Gross, and Jon Tran
Average review score:

An absolutely wonderful book
I had to read this book over this past summer for Leadership Team on my college campus and loved this book. The chapters are short so it is easy to put the book down if something arises (you won't want to though...) and the lessons and insight is simply wonderful. I think that anyone that is of college age or older should read this book and try to take the lessons learned to heart. It reveals the wonder of God and the depth of his love and power like few books I know, and I can't fully explain my love for this book. A definite must read for anyone serious about strengthening and developing their faith! :-)

A Must Have For Christians
If you don't want to be challenged as a Christian, do not buy this book. The writers cover many areas of the Christian life from faith to fellowship to what it means to truly be a follower of Jesus. The writing is down to earth and honest . These people have lived what they write about and do not pretend to be super-saints. Every chapter ends with suggestions for further reading which is invaluable. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting a deeper, more committed Christian life.

Haywire

A good, useful guide to the era Brooke lived in. I received a clean copy promptly and uneventfully.

Wistfully Narrative
Just before I began this review, I was listening to Ravel's "Pavane For a Dead Infanta", which is the classical piece played at Bridget Hayward's funeral in the Autumn of 1960. Her older sister's narrative of the triumphs and tragedies of her family has the beautiful solemnity of "Pavane" itself. It's like a flower that blooms, grows, and dies far too quickly, somehow never quite fulfilling its true potential, like her younger sister. The Haywards' story is a typical Hollywood-style tragedy. But I felt intrigued by the detailed descriptions of the people and places Brooke Hayward knew, enthralled by the descriptions of the stylishness of her step-mother, Pamela, who later became the U.S. Ambassador to France, the heartiness, of her Grandfather who spent hours creating a beautful display quilt for his two granddaughters when they were children, the lonliness her father, Leland Hayward still felt years after being abandoned by his mother, and his unfortunate continuation of that cycle of behavior, of Margaret Sullavan's domineering spirit, of the failure of Bridget and Bill to live up to parental expectations, and of young, ill-fated Bridget's accute case of Middle Child Syndrome. Somehow, I didn't feel altogether surprised by her early death. Along the way, Brooke expresses concern for those who cared for and about her family when she was growing up, and gives a facinating study of life in Old Hollywood and Broadway in their Golden Ages. As Henry Fonda was one of Margaret Sullavan's ex-husbands, and the Fonda children and Hayward children were very close, I've often wondered if actress Bridget Fonda was named for Bridget Hayward. Brooke Hayward is someone who has come through a lot in her life, and one can only hope that she and her brother have found some peace after all the unhappiness they suffered.

Heraldic Alphabet
Published in Paperback by Robson Book Ltd (April, 1997)
Author: J. P. Brooke-Little
Average review score:

Excellent Starter
This is a grand primer for those who have just begun to be interested in heraldry. It has clear black & white line drawings and concise non-stuffy text descriptions of heraldic elements, with some basic rules for assembling them and describing the results. "An Heraldic Alphabet" is aimed primarily at English modern heraldry. It does not cover every possible charge; it does not cover continental variations in style or rules. It is a great place to start, before jumping into more comprehensive (and more expensive) sources, such as Stephen Friar's "History of Heraldry", Arthur Charles Fox-Davies' "A Complete Guide to Heraldry", or "Heraldry Sources, Symbols and Meaning" by Neubecker, Brook-Little, and Tobler. Those interested in medieval heraldry, and medieval recreationists, will need guidance from other sources, such as the other books here mentioned and from their re-creation group's particular rules.

If you are interested in heraldry, you MUST own this book!
This has to be one of the rarest of things; a book on heraldry that is useful for beginners and serious students. And rarer still, the author shows occasional flashes of humor!

With hundreds of entries, this dictionary of heraldic terms is a godsend to students. J.P. Brooke-Little covers MANY terms, both familiar and obscure, and includes alternate spellings and obsolete terms that would be encountered in older blazons.

While no book of this sort could be comprehensive, "An Heralic Alphabet" is quite thourough, and a must have for any student of heraldry.

Island Barbecue: Spirited Recipes from the Caribbean
Published in Hardcover by Chronicle Books (April, 1995)
Authors: Dunstan A. Harris and Brooke Scudder
Average review score:

Wow - that is great barbecue
The marinades and sauces that are in this book make the most mouth watering barbecue that I have ever had. Most of the ingredients you can find in supermarkets. If you like a zing in your food, try this book out.

Island BBQ is a must for daydreamer's. Fun! Good source
This was a fun book to read for me. The stories that were read made the visualization process much more appealing. A cookbook should not be just recipies, but an inspiration to the craft. For me, Island Barbeque has been an inspiration as well as good source of information. I have used it to make wonderfully hot jerk marinades and sweet and spicy ginger beer, among other fantastic dishes.

Wow - Let's Eat !
We've been throught this book many times after getting it at an "odd lot" store that was dumping it. On a lark and for only five bucks, it's turned out the be THE book for us. Now, 9 years after its publication, relatives are looking for copies and the just don't exist!

delicious, easy recipes; not a dud in the bunch
my husband and i have prepared approximately one quarter of the recipes in this fantastic book, and they have all been great! none of the recipes are particularly hard to make; some of them are very quick and easy. the book presents a combination of simple fare, such as chili, steak sandwich with grilled onions, and sausage and rice soup, to more interesting dishes, such as lemon sesame chicken, pork medallions with pears, and a red pepper soup that is marvelous. outstanding value

An equally worthwhile read.

Moroccan Carpets
Published in Hardcover by Laurence King Pub (October, 1998)
Authors: Brooke Pickering, W. Russell Pickering, Ralph S. Yohe, and W. Russel Pickering
Average review score:

Buy this Book!
If you are interested in Moroccan carpets you should definitely have this book. This is by far the best book on the subject and the best book by Russell Pickering and his daughter Brooke Pickering. The pictures are fantastic. I have seen the rugs in this book in person and the pictures in the book are dead on accurate. The interspersing of pictures, text, and white space is masterful. Hali was involved in this book and it has the Hali look and the Alan Marcuson's masterful touch is very evident. Danny Shaffer is the editor and he does a great job. The book is easy to read and understand.

THE BEAUTY OF MOROCCAN CARPET
The illustrations and narrative of the MOROCCAN CARPETS by Russell and Brooke Pickering brings out the true allure of the Berber hand-loomed carpet showing the mood and feeling it lends to any setting. The exquisite designs and colors combine to create soft pastel formality or vibrant tribal decor. Working without the aide of a pattern, the artisan produces centuries-old motifs unique to each region reflecting the imagination and genius of the master weavers. This book gives us rare insight into the beauty of the Moroccan art of weaving.
